Germany Holidays

The legislation on public holidays in Germany falls in principle within the competence of individual countries. Only the German Unity Day as a national holiday on 3 October was an exception set out in the framework of a treaty by the government. All other days were determined by the countries where there are eight holidays that are valid in all 16 countries. In addition to these nine public holidays, eleven countries have adopted more holidays.

Public holidays in Germany are largely a clerical background, which includes the major holidays including Christmas and Easter. The National Day (Day of German Unity) and the May Day (Labor Day) are governed by federal law. All other holidays are set by state laws. Nine holidays and Sundays are all throughout the country, according to the Basic Law as a "day of rest and spiritual elevation."

Easter (Easter Sunday and Monday), Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the full moon following the vernal equinox (March 21). Therefore, there is no fixed calendar days for the Passover (public holidays in Germany).

Walpurgisnacht, the night before 1 May, the day of the Holy Walpurga. According to ancient beliefs riding on this night the witches on brooms, and meet the devil worship and dance on the block on the Brocken in the Harz mountains.

May Day, 1 May from the Second International based on its founding congress in 1889 as a "day of struggle of the work" (public holiday in Germany).

Ascension, on the 40th Day after Easter (legal holiday in Germany)

Pentecost (Whit Sunday and Monday), 50 days after Easter (excluding public holidays in Germany)

Corpus Christi, the feast of the Catholic Church for the worship of the Eucharist on the 2nd Thursday after Pentecost. In 2006 it was the 15th June. The celebration was on 15 June of the year 1279 the first celebration. The old custom to find a solemn processions (legal holiday in Bavaria, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and Thuringia, in some Catholic communities).

Reformation, 31 October (legal holiday in Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia)

All Saints Day, 1 November (public holiday in Bavaria, Baden-Wuerttemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland)
